BAZAR DEL SÁBADO
Bazar del Sábado
San Ángel
Every Saturday, the historic neighborhood of San Ángel comes alive with the vibrant energy of the Bazar del Sábado — an open-air market where art, design, and tradition come together. From handmade crafts to contemporary Mexican design, it’s the perfect place to discover authentic treasures in a beautiful colonial setting.
Follow the map we've shared with you in this section to explore our favorite shops, museums, and restaurants — and experience the very best of this charming district.
Begin your visit at:
1. Iglesia y Museo del Carmen
Visit the church, home to beautiful examples of Baroque art.
Next door is one of my favorite museums in Mexico City: a former Carmelite monastery from the 1620s. It features stunning architecture and a small but excellent collection of colonial religious art.
💡 Tip: Right next to the museum is Magda, a charming restaurant with a lovely terrace and view. A great spot for a drink or light snack.
2. Mercado del Carmen (Calle de Amargura)
Located inside a former hacienda, this stylish space offers a curated mix of designer boutiques and trendy restaurants — all in a cozy, contemporary setting.
3. Designer Shops & Fábrica Social
You'll find a selection of Mexican designer shops in nearby restored colonial homes.
Just across the park, don’t miss Fábrica Social, a fair-trade shop featuring beautifully embroidered textiles crafted by women artisans from across Mexico.
4. Casa del Obispo
Step into this elegant colonial-era residence — once home to a bishop — and enjoy its peaceful courtyard and historical charm.
5. Iglesia de San Jacinto
A beautiful 17th-century Dominican church, one of the few remnants of the original monastery complex. Its quiet courtyard is perfect for a moment of reflection.
6. Contemporary Design Shops & Street Market
Just beside San Jacinto Church, you’ll find a row of vibrant designer shops. Don’t miss the first one — it has the tallest stone steps and a colorful altar to Frida Kahlo.
7. Bazar del Sábado (Saturdays only)
Housed in a former conquistador’s residence, this weekend-only bazaar has been a San Ángel staple since the 1960s. It brings together fine Mexican design, art, and traditional crafts.
🍽️ In the inner courtyard, stop by Oxa, a relaxed restaurant perfect for brunch or drinks.
📍 Right next door is Saks, a classic restaurant set in a magnificent colonial house with 19th-century touches. Step inside even if just to admire the architecture.
🎨 A few steps away, visit Casa del Risco, a cultural center that showcases an extraordinary courtyard fountain adorned with mother-of-pearl, Mexican ceramics, and Asian porcelain.
8. De Corazón México
A beautiful boutique featuring high-end handmade pieces from Oaxaca. Their collection of ceramics and decorative objects is exceptional.
9. Art Market in the Park (Jardín del Arte)
Since the 1960s, artists have gathered here to sell their work independently. Stroll through this leafy park and enjoy a truly local cultural experience — it’s where art meets community.
UBER OR WALK TO:
· Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo
Located just next door to the restaurant, this was the home of Diego and Frida after they married.
It is considered the first example of modernist architecture in Mexico, designed and built by the renowned architect Juan O’Gorman.
I’m not sure if it’s open, but if it is, I highly recommend visiting Diego’s studio — it remains just as he left it before his death in 1957.
Even from the outside, the architecture is striking, and the cactus fence you’ll see is the original from 1932.
Note: This is not La Casa Azul (The Blue House), which was Frida’s childhood home. That one is also worth visiting and is located nearby in Coyoacán.
· San Ángel Inn Restaurant
Once a colonial-era hacienda, this is one of my favorite places in the area. It’s a perfect example of what aristocratic homes looked like during the colonial period. Take your time to enjoy the charming courtyard, arched corridors, lush back gardens, and the private domestic chapel.
They’re known for serving some of the best frozen margaritas in Mexico City.
